With the help of volunteers, a vacant lot in Dorchester was recently converted into an outdoor community space.

In celebration of Earth Day 2022, a 5,600 square foot lot at 84 Coleman St. has been transformed into “The Guild Sanctuary on Coleman” through an extensive cleanup and landscaping effort.

The project also included the construction and installation of a 2,000 square foot patio deck, seating area, sun shades and an information panel.

Three organizations have joined the project: Shawmut Design and Construction, EYP and The Guild. Community members also contributed to the project.

“Thanks to the incredible support of our amazing partners and neighbors, Coleman Sanctuary will be an oasis of community well-being, connection and cultural expression,” said Jhana Senxian, Founder and CEO of The Guild. “As with all The Guild sites, cross-generational residents will come together to program, manage and enjoy the beauty, talent and love of our community”

Volunteers from Shawmut, EYP, The Guild and the community build The Guild Sanctuary on Coleman to celebrate Earth Day.

The new public outdoor space aims to create “a community-focused green hub for gardening, health and wellness activities, a place for cultural art and design, and more for the surrounding neighborhood,” according to organizers.
