Just hours before the House Select Committee began its third televised hearing into the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, former President Donald Trump took to his Truth Social account to demand that he be given time to on the same networks to expose what he described as his evidence of “massive election fraud and breaches of Democrat security!”
He followed that up moments later with “I DEMAND EQUAL TIME!!!”
On Thursday, viewers would witness evidence of Trump’s attempts to bully former Vice President Mike Pence into overturning voters’ wills in the 2020 presidential election that a retired federal judge has called a “equivalent to a revolution”.
On the brink of more damaging information about his attempts to steal the election, Trump jumped on Truth Social to rage against the “Fake News Networks.”
“The Fake News Networks perpetuate Russia-Russia-Russia-type lies, lies, and misinformation (same sick people, here we go again!) by allowing low-rated but nonetheless one-sided and scurrilous Screening Committee hearings to go without end and aimless on (and so on!),” he wrote. “This is a one-sided, highly partisan witch hunt, the likes of which has never been seen in Congress before. Therefore, I hereby demand EQUAL TIME to spell out the massive voter fraud and violation of democratic security!”
He then added, “I DEMAND EQUAL TIME!!!”
Liz Cheney, vice chair of the House committee investigating the Capitol riot, said her third hearing in June will focus on Trump’s “relentless efforts” on January 6, 2021 and in the days preceding to persuade Mike Pence to reject Joe Biden’s victory.
“As a federal judge pointed out, this likely violated two federal criminal statutes. President Trump had no factual basis for what he was doing and was told it was illegal,” Cheney said on Twitter.
“Despite this, President Trump conspired with an attorney named John Eastman and others to overturn the January 6 election result.”
A committee aide said the hearing would examine Eastman’s role in shaping a plot for Trump to pressure Pence to overturn the election, backed by a false legal theory that represented a ” grave danger to American democracy.”
Cheney’s tweet featured a snippet of testimony from Trump’s White House attorney Eric Herschmann, who told Eastman the day after the insurgency, “Get a great criminal defense attorney. You’re going to need one. “
