Ilya Samsonov starts Game 3; Tom Wilson not available again originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington
The Capitals will look to Ilya Samsonov in goal for Game 3, coach Peter Laviolette confirmed Saturday morning.
Samsonov entered Game 2 as a replacement for Vitek Vanecek and stopped all 17 third-period shots he faced. The Capitals lost 5-1 as the series tied again.
“He came in and we didn’t play very well in front of him,” Laviolette said. “He looked really good in there and comfortable. Like we said before the series, that’s something we’ve done this year is that both goalies had an opportunity and came in and played well. He jumped off the bench, he did a really good job, our team wasn’t quite there and he was lively.
The Capitals will also be without forward Tom Wilson (lower body injury) for Game 3. Wilson was injured Tuesday in the Capitals’ Game 1 win.
Laviolette said the team is “working on some things in the room” on potential roster changes, which means the roster the Capitals deployed in Game 2 may not stay the same.
All of the Capitals’ first-round games against the Panthers will be available regionally on NBC Sports Washington and streamed live on the MyTeams app.
