Here’s where masks are advised in the Chicago area and who should wear them – NBC Chicago

Several COVID measures have increased over the past week, leading the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to increase the number of counties where precautions are suggested.

According to an update to the CDC’s county-by-county community levels map, 12% of U.S. counties are listed as having medium or high community levels, an increase from 9% last week.

Several counties in Illinois also made the list, prompting some local governments to issue specific mask recalls and guidance in addition to recommendations already outlined by the CDC.

In Chicago, health officials are “strongly recommending” residents wear masks as the city recently moved from a low to medium community level due to a growing number of COVID cases.

While Chicago remains at an average community level, health officials have said that if the city were to move into the upper category, a mask mandate could be reinstated.

Health officials in suburban Cook County issued similar guidelines following the change in status at the community level.

Masks are recommended indoors to protect people at high risk of serious illness, those with underlying health conditions and immunocompromised people, according to a news release from county health officials.

Recommendations differ slightly in Kane, McHenry, Lake, DuPage, DeKalb, Kendall, and Will counties, which are also listed in the medium category. As these counties have yet to issue specific mask guidelines, residents and visitors are encouraged to follow recommendations established by state health officials and the CDC.

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, people living in areas with increasing COVID-19 infections are advised to wear a mask if entering indoor spaces with other people present.

CDC recommendations differ, however.

The agency does not require or recommend masks for the general population at medium community level status. Instead, people at high risk of illness are encouraged to speak with their healthcare provider to determine if they should wear a mask. Masks are encouraged when a county is elevated to high community level status, according to the guidelines.
