Europe risks running out of gas in winter

Europe risks running out of natural gas stocks at peak demand in mid-winter if supplies to Russia via a vital pipeline are cut off completely, according to consultancy Wood Mackenzie Ltd.
In a worst-case scenario, with the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline to Germany completely shut down, Europe would not be able to meet the storage levels it had ordered, Massimo de Oduardo, vice president of research on gas and liquefied natural gas from the company, the European Union said in an email with the start of the heating season next November.
“The region could face a complete stockout by January,” de Oduardo added.
The official warned that “even when considering countermeasures, it may be unavoidable that demand streamlining will be necessary.”
