As the weekend draws to a close, news has come out of The envelope that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnessdirected by Sam Raimiearned over $800 million by officially passing Batman’s theatrical releases, the last major superhero movie to hit theaters. Doctor Strange 2 is still a nice chunk of change from Marvel’s last outing–Spider-Man: No Coming Home earned $1.89 billion upon release.

The man from the north continues to pull in audiences, though its VOD release has meant there will likely be no more movement after this weekend. To date, the historical action film directed by Robert Eggers has grossed around 64 million. The film stars Alexander Skarsgård and Anya Taylor-Joy as they seek revenge and escape the clutches of a grim fate.

This weekend also saw the first returns for Downton Abbey: A New Era, which grossed 16 million after its opening weekend. Universal Pictures, a specialty production of Universal Studios, released the sequel in 2019 Downton Abbey, which in turn was a sequel to the hit television series that ran from 2010 to 2015 and became an international phenomenon. The show follows the aristocratic Crawley family and their domestic helper through six seasons and fifty-two episodes.

Alex Garland’s Horror Movie”toxic masculinity“, aptly titled Men, also had a strong opening weekend (Entertainment Weekly). While 3.3 million may seem small compared to big releases, the film is a thought-provoking and divisive watch distributed by indie darling A24. For a better comparison, we can look at the opening numbers for Everything everywhere all at onceanother film distributed by A24, which grossed 3.2 million in its opening weekend.
