Major historical and strategic achievements under the UAE’s peaceful nuclear energy program since its launch in 2008 have made the UAE the first in the Arab world to have a multi-tiered peaceful nuclear energy project. plants in operation and to consolidate their position as world leader. position in terms of its distinguished efforts to address the phenomenon of climate change, with a view to achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
Since its establishment by an edict issued by the late Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, may God have mercy on him, in December 2009, the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation has been keen to implement the guidelines of rational leadership to develop peaceful nuclear energy in accordance with local regulatory requirements and the highest international standards for safety, security, quality, transparency and nuclear non-proliferation.
In barely a decade, Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation and its subsidiaries have made outstanding achievements that have resulted in a qualitative leap in the UAE’s energy sector and in the economy in general, which has helped to accelerate the reduction of the carbon footprint of the energy sector and thus reduce carbon emissions in addition to the significant contribution to achieving the goals of the UAE Strategic Initiative for Climate Neutrality 2050.
The late Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, may God have mercy on him, was keen to support the human cadre working in the Barakah region, where more than 2,000 Emiratis have participated in the Barakah project over the past ten years, which has established a human base of national skills in the field of nuclear energy which constitutes a major pillar for embarking on the future.
Last year, the first of Barakah’s peaceful nuclear power plants in the Al Dhafra region of the emirate of Abu Dhabi was commissioned, producing up to 1,400 megawatts of carbon-free electricity and reducing more than five million tons of these emissions, in a historic achievement that made the United Arab Emirates the first in the Arab world to generate electricity using nuclear energy technology, and after less than 12 month, i.e. in March 2022, the second Barakah power station also started commercial operation to double the amount of environmentally friendly electricity produced by Barakah and also double the volume of emissions from carbon which reduce it. Thus, the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation has come more than halfway to achieving its goal of producing up to 5,600 megawatts of environmentally friendly electricity, which covers 25% of electricity needs. from the country.
The role of the United Arab Emirates Peaceful Nuclear Power Program and Barakah Power Plants goes beyond the cornerstone of the program and provides environmentally friendly electricity, as it contributes to the development of new industrial sectors and a local supply chain based on international standards, in addition to the most important role of developing a distinguished scientific base of specialist Emirati skills in this technology sector which is considered, under the guidance of the able leadership, as one of the most important wealth held by the country.
