“Research and education have always been a major driver of the need for a new acute care hospital in the region,” said hospital CEO David Musyj. “Windsor Regional Hospital welcomes this planning work with the University of Windsor to advance this concept.

The new center would become a hub for health care research, training and private sector health service providers focused on new start-ups. It would include links with the local university’s Schulich School of Medicine, the Faculty of Science and its school of nursing.

“Over the years, we have continued to strengthen the vital links between our institutions,” said university president Rob Gordon.

“Students have all benefited from our longstanding relationship through experiential learning and we have also been exceptional partners in research, innovation and outreach – including the WE-SPARK Health Institute.”

Developers even hope the new research park could include hotel space, residential student accommodation, a long-term care facility, wellness center and medical offices.

The establishment of such a research center – on the grounds of the new hospital – would be one of the first of its kind in Ontario, but there is growing expectation that it will be developed by communities in future,” said Dr. Wassim Saad, chief of staff at Windsor Regional Hospital.

“It’s essential for several reasons,” he said. “Having a new innovation park like this will help tremendously in recruiting and bringing doctors to the hospital. It is also very important for patient care.

“It’s not just about research at the moment, but about how to help patient healthcare in the future – to keep people from going to hospital and staying healthy. “

Discussions are in their early stages in an advisory council that includes representatives from the hospital and the university.

“There is no plan at the moment,” Saad said. “We are in the very early discussions of what to include. This will likely change over several months before it finally begins to be built.

“We know how essential university teaching and university collaboration with the hospital have become with a teaching and research component. We already have a good connection with Windsor, Western (universities) and St. Clair College.

University of Windsor staff and students are excited about the potential that would be created through the new research center, said Dean of the School of Nursing Debbie Sheppard-Lemoine, who is also a member of the University’s advisory board. ‘Innovation Park.

“The park will create innovative research opportunities and capabilities within a model of interprofessional collaboration between undergraduate and graduate university students, faculty and practitioners,” she said. “It will also extend from local communities to national and international communities.

It is expected that the “health innovation park” will open at the same time as the new hospital, Saad said.

“When we collaborate on this, it’s not just about research potential, but also about helping to attract top talent to this region,” he said. “Most people realize that research advances their capabilities, whether it’s private industry or healthcare. This is the next step in advancing this goal.
