2022 Kentucky Derby horses, contenders, odds, date: Expert who nailed 9 Derby-Oaks Doubles reveals his picks

The 2022 Kentucky Derby ground includes a number of experienced horses, but no more than Barber Road. Son of Race Day and Encounter, Barber Road has made eight starts in his career, recording a second-place finish in four of his last five outings. However, the Barber Road trainer (John Ortiz), jockey (Reylu Gutierrez) and owner (Bill Simon) are all making their 2022 Kentucky Derby debuts, which begin on Saturday. Does Barber Road have a realistic chance of winning the first jewel in the coveted Triple Crown of horse racing? According to the latest 2022 Kentucky Derby odds, Barber Road is a long shot at 30-1. Zandon is the 3-1 favorite, while Epicenter (7-2), Messier (8-1), Mo Donegal (10-1) and White Abarrio (10-1) are also among the top contenders for the 2022 Kentucky Derby The 2022 Kentucky Derby post time is 6:57 p.m. ET. With so much to consider, you’ll want to see what SportsLine’s Jody Demling has to say before entering your own 2022 Kentucky Derby picks or your own horse racing predictions.

A staple of the horse racing world who has been writing, speaking and betting on races for years, Demling has been on point with his horse racing betting. He hit the exacta at Wood Memorial in April. Last year he hit the exacta, trifecta and superfecta in the Belmont Stakes. It’s the same handicapper who has pulled off the Derby-Oaks double at Churchill Downs nine times in the past 13 years. That means he’s held a ticket with winners Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby nearly four times in his last 13 tries.

Additionally, at some point in 2020, he picked the winners of six consecutive races: the Saudi Cup, Gotham Stakes, Rebel Stakes, Louisiana Derby, Florida Derby and Belmont Stakes. On Friday, he nailed the exacta in the 2022 Kentucky Oaks. Anyone who has followed him on those runs is up there.

Now, with the 2022 Kentucky Derby lineup locked down, Demling is sharing his picks and predictions on SportsLine. Go here to see them.

Best Kentucky Derby 2022 Predictions

One of Demling’s surprising picks for the 2022 Kentucky Derby: He’s fading Epicenter, claiming one of the top favorites barely makes the top three. Epicenter is one of the only horses in the 2022 Kentucky Derby to have both Beyer and Brisnet speed figures of 100 or higher. However, Epicenter’s second-place finish at the Lecomte Stakes in January gives the pundit pause.

“I was really hoping he would be the favorite so I could get a better price on my first two,” Demling told SportsLine. “The only race in Epicenter where he didn’t finish first or second was at Churchill Downs in his first match. He won in leading and stalking and has really good speed numbers. I can see him capturing the roses, but I’m going somewhere else.”

Another stunner: Demling is high on Mo Donegal, although he is a long shot in double figures and will run from the inside post. Mo Donegal will leave the No.1 position on Saturday. Ferdinand, the 1986 champion, was the last horse to win the Kentucky Derby from this location.

Despite the inside post drawing, Demling still believes Mo Donegal will have a legitimate chance to win at Churchill Downs. “Generally, the No. 1 post position is a bad draw, but he’ll back up and make a run,” Demling told SportsLine. The three-year-old Colt showed impressive acceleration and determination in his Remsen Stakes win in December, beating 2022 Kentucky Derby favorite Zandon in the process.

How to make picks and bets for the 2022 Kentucky Derby

Demling is particularly high on a bigger double-digit evening long shot who “trained very well at Churchill Downs” and is ready to hit the board hard. Demling shares which horse it is, along with his entire projected ranking, on SportsLine.
