2022 Kentucky Derby horses, contenders, odds, date: Expert who nailed 9 Derby-Oaks Doubles reveals his picks

More than 100,000 fans are expected to attend the 2022 Kentucky Derby, but a familiar face won’t be at Churchill Downs. Legendary trainer Bob Baffert has been suspended for this year’s Run for the Roses after last year’s winner Medina Spirit tested positive for a banned substance. Baffert’s absence created not only a void in the horse racing world, but also an opportunity for handicappers. Which 2022 Kentucky Derby contenders are the most valuable? Chad Brown’s Zandon was the 3-1 favorite from the morning line but moved to 8-1 in the latest 2022 Kentucky Derby odds. Zandon has drawn an ideal post position so should he be one of your 2022 Kentucky Derby picks at his new odds? What about the two 2022 Kentucky Derby favorites, Taiba and Epicenter, at 5-1? The 2022 Kentucky Derby post time is 6:57 p.m. ET. With so much to consider, you’ll want to see what SportsLine’s Jody Demling has to say before entering your own 2022 Kentucky Derby picks or your own horse racing predictions.

A staple of the horse racing world who has been writing, speaking and betting on races for years, Demling has been on point with his horse racing betting. He hit the exacta at Wood Memorial in April. Last year he hit the exacta, trifecta and superfecta in the Belmont Stakes. It’s the same handicapper who has pulled off the Derby-Oaks double at Churchill Downs nine times in the past 13 years. That means he’s held a ticket with winners Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby nearly four times in his last 13 tries.

Additionally, at some point in 2020, he picked the winners of six consecutive races: the Saudi Cup, Gotham Stakes, Rebel Stakes, Louisiana Derby, Florida Derby and Belmont Stakes. On Friday, he nailed the exacta in the 2022 Kentucky Oaks. Anyone who has followed him on those runs is up there.

Now, with the 2022 Kentucky Derby lineup locked down, Demling is sharing his picks and predictions on SportsLine. Go here to see them.

Best Kentucky Derby 2022 Predictions

One of Demling’s surprising picks for the 2022 Kentucky Derby: He’s fading Epicenter, claiming one of the top favorites barely makes the top three. Trained by Steve Asmussen, Epicenter will have experience on his side after having contested six races at two and three years old. However, he was not dominant and you would be hard pressed to find anyone who had less luck in the Kentucky Derby than Asmussen.

The winningest trainer in North American horse racing history, Asmussen is a staggering 0 for 23 in the Kentucky Derby. Epicenter finished sixth in his first race at Churchill Downs as a two-year-old when a sloppy track contributed heavily to his failures. Track conditions could still be a factor on Saturday with rain falling Friday in Louisville.

Another stunner: Demling is high on Mo Donegal, although he is almost in double figures and will run from the inside post. Mo Donegal is one of the few horses in the field who can claim to have beaten Zandon in one of the prep races for the 2022 Kentucky Derby. The Remsen Stakes aren’t on the same level as Sunday’s race, but Mo Donegal managed to knock out Zandon on this start. There aren’t many other horses that can make that claim.

Mo Donegal also comes from a background rich in history, as his father Uncle Mo also sired 2016 Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist. his closing speed to win the Wood Memorial Stakes. He was also trained by the experienced Todd Pletcher, which gave him a lot of value on Saturday.

How to make picks and bets for the 2022 Kentucky Derby

Demling is particularly high on a bigger double-digit evening long shot who “trained very well at Churchill Downs” and is ready to hit the board hard. Demling shares which horse it is, along with his entire projected ranking, on SportsLine.
